Emberheart

EXPLORE ASEMI

The Heart of Asemi

Deep within Asemi's volcanic canyons lies a region where rivers of glowing embers flow beneath towering bridges, lanterns illuminate the night sky, and entire communities thrive along the cliffs.

Welcome to Emberheart.

Here, warmth is more than the heat rising from the volcanic earth. It lives in the people, their traditions, and the connections they share.

From bustling bridge markets to quiet family gatherings, Emberheart is a place where stories are told, names are remembered, and the past remains an important part of the present.

But beneath its beauty and warmth, not every part of Emberheart experiences life in quite the same way.

And sometimes, the greatest distance between people isn't measured in miles, but in the bridges that separate them.

The Land

Emberheart is a vast volcanic canyon region defined by towering black cliffs, glowing ember rivers, and cities built into the mountainsides.

Its capital, M'bali, is one of Asemi's most remarkable cities. Built vertically along the canyon walls, it is connected by an elaborate network of bridges, lantern towers, cliffside pathways, and suspended markets.

The city rises in layers. Along the upper bridges, beautifully maintained buildings, flourishing markets, and elaborate public spaces reflect the prosperity of the higher districts. Farther below, older neighborhoods and working communities occupy the lower canyon levels, where infrastructure is more weathered and resources are less plentiful.

Despite these differences, the districts remain connected through the bridges and pathways that have supported generations of Emberfolk.

At night, thousands of lanterns illuminate the canyon, transforming M'bali into what travelers describe as a fallen constellation beneath the earth.

Transportation includes canyon lifts, lantern gondolas, thermal gliders, and the bridge runners who navigate the city's intricate pathways.

Beyond its crowded settlements, Emberheart is home to cliff goats, heat-adapted birds, small lizards, bridge dogs, ember-river fish, and other creatures suited to its unusual environment.

Among them are Cindervaults, the sacred echo-sensitive creatures of Emberheart. These enormous birds resemble a blend of raven and hawk, with dark feathers carrying softly glowing ember patterns and eyes that shine gold-orange in the darkness. Intelligent and capable of speech, they are regarded as companions, messengers, and guardians of the canyon.

The People

The people of Emberheart, known as Emberfolk, are expressive, communal, and deeply connected to their ancestry.

Their guiding belief is:

"Echoes preserve us."

Memory holds a special place in Emberheart's culture. Family names, stories, and traditions are passed from one generation to the next, and remembering those who came before is considered an important responsibility.

Emberfolk are known for their warmth and hospitality. Gatherings often bring together family, neighbors, friends, and travelers, with conversation and shared meals at the center of community life.

Their appearance reflects Asemi's diversity, with complexions ranging from deep ebony and mahogany to warm bronze, golden brown, and lighter tones.

Clothing is often influenced by West African and Afro-Arab aesthetics, featuring layered wraps, embroidered fabrics, copper jewelry, gold cuffs, ash-colored robes, and decorative ember-thread stitching.

Hair may be worn in braided crowns, locs threaded with copper, shaved patterns, or practical wraps favored by bridge runners.

Some hairstyles and adornments reflect family lineage, profession, or district identity.

While Emberfolk share a strong cultural identity, life can differ considerably depending on where someone lives within the canyon.

The people of the upper and lower districts may walk the same bridges, celebrate the same traditions, and share the same history, yet experience very different opportunities.

It is one of the many contradictions that make Emberheart both beautiful and complicated.

Life & Traditions

Life in Emberheart is filled with movement, conversation, and the constant glow of lanterns.

Bridge markets bustle with merchants selling fabrics, spices, jewelry, and goods brought from across Asemi. Tea houses and ember kitchens provide gathering places where stories are exchanged and friendships strengthened.

Food is an important part of community life.

Smoked meats, emberfish, roasted peppers, grilled river fish, spiced flatbreads, cinnamon teas, and glowing emberfruit are among the foods enjoyed throughout the region.

Meals are often shared, and eating together is considered a natural expression of connection.

Lanterns hold particular cultural significance.

They are lit to honor ancestors, remember loved ones, welcome travelers, and celebrate important moments. During gatherings, their warm glow fills the plazas and bridges, connecting the city's different levels beneath a shared light.

Children raised in Emberheart learn to navigate bridges, lifts, and narrow canyon pathways from an early age. Heights are simply part of everyday life.

Throughout the city, people work as merchants, craftspeople, cooks, bridge runners, and caretakers of the many systems that keep M'bali functioning.

Life moves constantly, from the uppermost bridges to the oldest structures deep within the canyon.

And while the city is famous for its warmth and celebrations, its people understand that maintaining a community requires more than simply living beside one another.

It requires remembering that everyone belongs.

Echoes of the Past

Emberheart's history is woven into its bridges, lanterns, and the generations of families who have called its canyons home.

For centuries, memory has shaped the region's identity.

Names are preserved through storytelling. Traditions are carried through family gatherings, and lanterns serve as reminders of those who came before.

The bridges themselves are more than structures connecting one district to another.

They represent the relationships that have sustained Emberheart through generations of change.

Yet not every part of the city's history is equally visible.

Some of M'bali's oldest pathways descend into sections of the canyon that few travelers visit. Ancient structures remain beneath the thriving upper districts, and parts of the city's past are remembered more clearly than others.

In a region where memory is sacred, the possibility of being forgotten carries particular significance.

What Emberheart chooses to remember—and what it has allowed to fade—may reveal more about its future than its people realize.

Whispers of the Region

Lanterns shine brightest when the darkness gathers.

Bridges are built to connect, but they cannot make people cross.

And even in a city filled with warmth, someone may still be left standing in the cold.

For Emberheart to remember its strength, it must remember all its people.
